A Conversation on Family, Inspiration, and Everyday Magic in Tel Aviv

Nestled on a quiet street just off the vibrant Shenkin district, Shira (36) and Omer’s (43) bright Bauhaus-era apartment overflows with art, books, and character. Here, the couple- an art director and journalist- have created a home for their children, Geffen (5) and Ari (3), that’s both inspiring and deeply personal.

How has motherhood shaped your journey as a designer?

"Art, culture, music, and cinema have always been my anchors- from childhood through adulthood. My independence truly blossomed with motherhood. I saw it as a choice involving immense love, responsibility, and honesty- three words that define me. Responsibility for my children’s future, and honesty regarding what I want to do and who I want to be, both as a mother and an artist. I want to pass on honesty as a compass to my children."

Your home feels like a living, breathing collection. How did you create this environment?

"Our home is a layered collection of memories, aesthetics, and passion. We aren’t hoarders; we choose our things carefully. The house is full of pictures, posters, art and design books, and meaningful gifts from friends. For the children, I believe these surroundings become part of who they are, even if they can’t always express it in words."

What does Tel Aviv mean to you as a parent and creator?

"Tel Aviv is an amazing city, filled with small parks, a wonderful beach, and a close-knit community. Sometimes, it feels like a small village hidden within a big city. The architecture inspires me, and walks with Geffen through the streets fill my heart with ideas. We love imagining what’s inside the beautiful homes we see."

How do you nurture your children’s creativity?

"Our children invent worlds- drawing, dressing up, performing. We don’t channel them- it’s important they find their own path. It’s this openness and freedom that we value most as a creative family."

Any favorite activities together?

"We like to draw and design together, we all laugh, do imitations, and create little performances. There’s a constant exchange of ideas and characters."

How do you recharge your creative energy?

"When there are busier times, I need to consciously create breaks for myself. Weekends are for replenishing- drawing with the kids, reading, and enjoying elaborate meals together. That’s when we process the week and find inspiration from a purer place."

"It’s this openness of thought, and perhaps the release and lack of expectation, that we believe in the most as creative individuals."
